Growing in Holiness Through Your Work As A Student

It's time for accordian folders, notebooks and backpacks again! Summer was great but many of us have to admit, it went by too fast! It's now time to look forward to a new school year, which brings us to this month's topic: work.

First of all, you need to know that work is and always has been a part of God's plan for men and women. Some people think that work was a punishment for Adam and Eve's original sin. Well, that's totally not the case!  When God created men and women, He created them to work : "to till and keep the garden"  as it says in Genesis. The effects of original sin were that work became difficult to undertake, frustrating and tiring, among other things.

You may be wondering, what does all this has to do with me? Well, it has a lot to do with you! See, your "work" at this age and stage in your life is studying. This is you primary responsibility: to be a good student; but more than that, it's your path to grow in holiness.

Writting essays, learning spelling words and adding up numbers may seem like unexciting ways to become a saint, yet, there is huge value in these things when done well and for the love of God. These are the two most important things if you are to become holy in your studies:
  • Your work (this includes studying, doing homework, helping a classmate, keeping your things organized)  has to be done well.
  • You need to offer it to God and do it because you love Him so much.

Did you know that you can grow in different virtues through your work as a student? Here are some practical ways on how to grow in holiness through your work as a student:
  • Before you start a class, or your homework, offer it to God for a particular intention (for a relative that is sick, for peace in the world, for your Bishop, etc.)
  • Keep your school supplies organized and in a good shape (you will be exercising the virtue of order)
  • Finish the project you started, even if you feel likle doing something else (you'll be growing in perseverance and fortitude)
  • Don't leave things for the last minute

It's time to sit down and set some goals for yourself for this month, and always remember girl,
it's all part of YOUR PLAN!
